In 'The Custom House' Hawthorne defines the medium for romance writing as one which combines the warm light of a fire with the 'cold spirituality of the moonbeams', creating a place 'where the Actual and the Imaginary may meet, and each imbue itself with the nature of the other'. Kenyon encounters sportive battle with flowers used as weapons. 'The sport of mankind, like its deepest earnest, is a battle', Hawthorne tells us, 'so these festive people fought one another with ammunition of sugar-plums and flowers' (439). Knights and ladies pelt each other with 'fragrant bunches of sentiment' which, instead of being 'fresh and virgin blossoms' gathered from the countryside as in times past, are now 'venal and polluted flowers', tied together by 'sordid hands'. They are 'miserably wilted' so that, at best, they make only flaccid ammunition: everything that surrounds Kenyon at this point verges on impotence.

SCHOLNICK In the 1876 preface Whitman asserted that a major purpose of Leaves of Grass was to 'express ... the eternal body composite, cumulative' and the 'natural character' of the poet. He then added a 'full confession' of his own emotional vulnerability and his excruciating need to be loved by the reader: I also sent out Leaves of Grass to arouse and set flowing in men's and women's hearts, young and old, endless streams of living, pulsating love and friendship, directly from them to myself; now and ever.
